Matt has taken his calling as a “musical missionary” to create a substantial impact on a national and global stage. As an award-winning songwriter, Maher gained notice as the co-writer of the internationally renowned modern-worship song, “Your Grace Is Enough,” recorded by Chris Tomlin. His music, writing and live performances are intentional, compelling, experiential and draw people into a community of dependence on Christ. He’s not only a songwriter and worship leader; his ability to communicate allows him to facilitate community at the intersection where culture meets the church. Amid busy touring and writing schedules, Maher finds it important to serve alongside ministries including Life Teen, Adore Ministries, and Catholic Relief Services while still playing an active role with Oregon Catholic Press’ spiritandsong.com.

His greatest joy has never changed in all these years and that is his love of the Eucharist. “Even now, almost 24 years after going into the seminary, I am still amazed that God chose me—the guy who still keeps his long hair, doesn’t like to wear shoes, plays his music way too loud—can you believe God wants this guy, ME, to be a priest for his people?” In his fifth year at Steubenville Youth Conferences, Father J is thankful for everyone who puts so much effort into these events.

Kate is now a full-time mom and an independent representative for Silpada Designs Jewelry Company.

Article by SS Scoop photographer Gina Lee

Who is José Horacio Gómez you say? Well, this man was born on December 26, 1951 in Monterrey, Mexico and was ordained on August 15, 1978. He continued in this wonderful vocation of his and became the auxiliary bishop of Denver on January 23, 2001 by Pope John Paul II (THE POPE IS DOOOPE!) Then he was appointed Archbishop of San Antonio on December 29, 2004 and in 2007 he was named Time Magazine’s 25 most influential Hispanics in the USA. What an amazing man. He moved from being born into a humble family of 5 children to becoming named one of the 25 most influential Hispanics in the USA.

So what does all this information pertain to? Well, on April 6, 2010 Mr. José Horacio Gómez was appointed Coadjutor Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles by Pope Benedict XVI. Which means Archbishop Gómez will probably become a cardinal since the Archbishop of Los Angeles has traditionally been a cardinal. If this does happen, he will be the only Hispanic cardinal in the USA. It is planned that Archbishop Gómez will succeed Cardinal Roger Mahony who will be retiring in February 27, 2011 after 25 years of wonderful service as the Archbishop of Los Angeles. Archbishop Gómez said, “I’m very grateful to the Holy Father for giving me this opportunity to serve the Church with a mentor and leader like Cardinal Roger Mahony.”

Cardinal Roger Mahony, thank you for all your years of service. You will be missed!

Knock, knock?

Who’s there?

Bunny.

Bunny who?

Bunny-th the basket is a surprise!

;D

And a surprise indeed was in the baskets for the Sung Sam’s high school annual Easter Basket sale!

Every Easter, the high school students put together Easter baskets stuffed with candies, eggs, and toys for little children, and this year was no different. On Easter Vigil, we all got together to help make the baskets. Thanks to a wonderful parent who donated over 200 eggs (that’s a lot of chickens…), we had more than enough to go in the baskets. And thanks to David Yi and Ceekay Kim who found the cutest toys to put into the baskets!

Crumple newspaper, put into basket, repeat. Stuff with multi-colored artificial, plastic grass, repeat. Place basket into cellophane wrap, repeat. The basket making was a repetitive job but with everyone’s hard work and dedication, the job got done efficiently. And this year, due to Joe’s knowledge on boiling eggs, we didn’t crack as many. But if we did, we just ate it. (: The good eggs were then dyed and after they dried, were placed into the basket.

That night after the Easter Vigil mass, we had a pre-sale. And we got a lot of people who attend Korean mass to buy some. And the next day, (the day Christ rose from the dead!) after mass, the baskets all sold in less than an hour.

I think it’s safe to say that this year’s Easter Basket sale was a SUCCESS! But it’s okay, if you didn’t buy one this year, buy one next year (: !

Beneficial Earthquakes

SS Scoop writer Angela Kim

We now all heard about the earthquake in Haiti. Some people have asked why God did this. The obvious answer is that God did not cause this natural disaster; earthquakes are just part of earth. But maybe God did mean for this to happen. As we learned in class, Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere and it is often struck by strong hurricanes of the Caribbean. Few knew about these facts before the earthquake. Maybe this disaster was a way of God to call attention to our brothers and sisters in need. Since the earthquake, millions of dollars have been raised to help the Haitians, and reconstructing has already started. God screamed to us and showed the world the shape Haiti was in even before the earthquake. And now the country has the eyes of the whole world and maybe it will end up better than it was before. Maybe it was just another natural disaster but I’d like to believe that it was God’s scream, because He is always with the ones that need the most.

———————————-

Step Out

SS Scoop writer Tori Park

I’m sure all of you know what happened in Haiti. 7.0 magnitude earthquake that hit Haiti on January 12, 2010 4:53 pm. But honestly, before the earthquake I had only heard of Haiti once or twice. I didn’t know that Haiti was a fourth world country; I didn’t know Haiti was one of the poorest countries in the world; I didn’t even know where Haiti was. Several weeks after the earthquake, I had a district writing prompt on moral responsibility and I instantly thought of Haiti; how it’s our moral responsibility to help out those victims in need, etc etc. But after that prompt, I started thinking. Why does it take a natural disaster like this for society to finally open our eyes to start doing acts of charity? Haiti was in such a devastation condition before, why do we begin to help when it’s even worse? If there was no earthquake, and you were asked to help out Haiti would you? I don’t think many of us would. Maybe that’s just human nature, but we have a moral responsibility to provide for those who are need of our service. So I guess what I’m trying to say is, there isn’t always going to be a natural disaster to open our eyes. I understand that most of you are young and can’t go over to Haiti and help them rebuild stuff but you can always donate and get others to donate as well. Moral responsibility isn’t just not letting the bad things happen, it’s stepping outside of our box, our comfort zone; doing something about the problems and doing acts of benevolence.

———————————-

No Other Way

As I continued to keep up with the news of Haiti, I could not see past the rubble, the lives lost. All I saw was the emotional distress, the worry. I saw nothing positive in the situation at hand. God is not with these people, I thought, What did they do wrong? But no sooner did I realize that I could not have been so wrong about the situation. God had been with these people all this time. The rest of the world, who were so consumed in the world and its materialistic possessions, were the ones who were not with God. The Haitians, with so little resources and possessions, had so much to offer and to teach to the rest of the world. Because they weren’t so blinded by the things of this world, the people of Haiti could see God clearly and feel His true presence living amongst them.

Through the natural disaster, I saw the world coming together as one. We were crying together, hoping together, helping together, and praying together; it was truly a beautiful sight to see. Despite the negativity of the circumstances, there was always hope hiding in every news story, in every picture posted up on the news, in every person’s face because we, as the world continued to grow together in unity, knew that we would be able to pull and were pulling out of this rut we were stuck in.

Now, as I see the world conforming because of this natural disaster, I realized that things could always be worse and that if I look beneath all the rubble, all the emotional distress and worry, I could always find hope. I learned that God is always watching and brings about these hardships and difficulties in our lives in order to help us, to teach us, and to discipline us.

His willingness to bring us back into His arms is great; His care, even greater; His love, unconditional to the point where no words can describe. We are His children, and He is our Heavenly Father; I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Article by SS Scoop writer Angela Kim

Yup! Lent is here again and it’s that time of the year when I stop eating meat, run away from junk food, and exercise every morning because I’m sure God wants me to lose some weight and get in shape. Or am I? Lent is a season for us to prepare for Easter, not for our next school dance. Lent is not a season to give up something for forty days, but to change our lives to be closer to God. This year I didn’t know what to give up, so my cousin told me to do something extra instead. So we decided to pray the daily rosary and read the Bible daily. And since this takes at least 20 minutes, I am also giving up Facebook. Only now I realize how addicted I was to Facebook and I am glad I talked to my cousin before choosing my Lenten promise. But when I told my mom about my promises, she was a little disappointed. She said, “Instead of doing all that why don’t you start simple and clean the jungle you call a room?” Then I thought…but that’s gonna be so hard! After I thought for a while I came to the conclusion that my mom was right. If the mess in my room upsets her so much, I think I could make my bed every morning and restrain from throwing a pile of clothes on it everyday. But… it’s only the second day and I already have a couple of shirts hidden under my blankets. This year’s Lent is going to be the hardest for me because my room really is a problem. It does not take me away from God, but it makes my mom upset. Praying the rosary and reading the Bible are not going to be easy but I actually like doing those. I advise you to examine what you have to change in your lifestyle. Giving up meat, for example, is good if it is done for the right cause. I have to say last year I gave up meat and it was not for the right reason. You don’t have to fast for forty days. If you’re not close to God, just wake up in the morning and say good morning God. If you are addicted to Facebook like I am, give it up. I assure you there are many other things to do on the internet. I watched hundreds of Youtube videos, created a blog, and read articles about Lent in two days. If you really don’t know what to do, pray about it, and God will tell you what you have to change! So good luck with your promises and may God be with you during this Lent.
